Thoughts please
Monday 7th June 2010 @ 12:00 am / random life / 0 comments

Your thoughts please ... especially those who work/have worked with young people - and especially those who work with troubled teens ...

is this an ideal solution, or ludicrous?

Me? I want to see recidivism rates.

As someone who has been out around the northern lakes of USA, having nothing but a canoe & friends - no homes or villages for hundreds of miles - the freedom of the wilds is simply stunning ... it's affects cannot be underestimated.

Home without anything broken ...
Saturday 14th March 2009 @ 11:35 am / random life / 1 comment

I’m not at all sure I’ll have the words to adequately express what I am about to share …

Scratch that. I know I don’t have the words.

It comes close to a feeling only felt. An encounter only experienced. A chance moment only lived.

Sounds dramatic – it wasn’t. It was quite the opposite.

It happened during this last week’s ski trip to Bulgaria.
You should go there by the way – yes, a lot of Bulgarians seem to be a bit rude, yes the Bulgaria-ski company turned out to be ‘not-very-nice-people’ (to use ...

got an opinion?
Tuesday 3rd March 2009 @ 9:43 am / random life / 3 comments

Do you suffer from allodoxaphobia?

it is the fear of opinions.

Josef Stalin once said: "I prefer my people to be loyal out of fear rather than conviction. Convictions can change but fear remains."

I would suggest he was allodoxophobic. Amongst other things.

Truth is, allodoxophobia is a lot more common than we might think ... essentially because we are more confortable in our own backyard. While safe in our own territory, we know the familiar, we know the ground, the holes, the views, the birds, the past and the predictable future of what lies around us. it's a good ...

If you're bored you can listen to my first foray into national Sunday broadcasting ... it's at that link for the next week, so you'd better be quick! (yes, I'm sure you'll be gagging to hear it!)

The radio service from last Sunday on RTE - it was a lot of fun to do actually. Mostly because of the students I got to bring with me ... Suzanne Tanja and Brendan acted like six year olds with a new toy. It ...

It's not every day ...
Tuesday 17th February 2009 @ 6:33 pm / random life / 2 comments

This report was written for a happening in college this morning .. .and, yes, it's not every day you get to experience this ...

In late February, a very familiar and loved face, clumbered out of a car in the front Square of Trinity college Dublin. The car was unmarked – a regular family vehicle owned by one of the college chaplains. But as the figure awkwardly found steady feet and as his back straightened, tourists and students alike stopped and pointed, nudging themselves closer to see if it really was him.

Archbishop Desmond Tutu duly smiled and shook hands ...

Everyone has their own angle on the new President Obama ... tomorrow I'll put up my two favourite images from the day ... but today, rather than talk about Obama's incredible restraint in his speech, his authentic stumbles (oh my goodness he is human!), his hopefilled rhetoric, and the incredible phenomenon of a nation almost completely united ... I thought I'd enjoy the moment.

Once again, the Spence meister sends a complete treat to help enjoy the moment ...

OK, i look cross eyed, but apart from that ...

no means ... ???
Monday 15th December 2008 @ 10:17 pm / random life / 2 comments

Yesterdays thoughts were inspired by this - I thought you should know!

Honestly, I wasn't here for the irish vote on Lisbon, and I am very unaware of the issues (as a resident of Dublin now, that's probably a huge part of the Yes campaign's problem) ... but surely eyebrows must be raised when a country holds a referendum, the government does not get the popular vote it requires, and then within a matter of months says, "ok then, we'll have another vote"

Responsible???????

sorry ...
Wednesday 3rd December 2008 @ 9:58 am / random life / 1 comment

I feel hugely apologetic for not blogging much recently ... not sure why, but a combination of restricted time to write and restricted ideas, plus some regular bloggers out there writing some really really good stuff ... I wouldn't feel guilty at all if it were only myself and a few regular readers, but the good folk at ignite tell me this blog gets hits into the hundreds per day ... which I find hard to believe, but who am I to argue with the bosses?!

So please know I intend to do better ...

and in the meantime, if you are ...

Reap what you sow
Saturday 25th October 2008 @ 9:57 pm / random life / 0 comments

This is old news, especially in the world of politics, but I believe that this is the kinda stuff the Apostle Paul was talking about when he wrote that:

'God is not mocked, for you reap whatever you sow,' to the Galatians ...

Good to see that Senator McCain at least recognises the fear and danger his 'approved' advertising has stirred ...

M Scott Peck has many many good words of wisdom and spirituality ...

I thought I would put a couple of them down for you to take with you into wherever you are going over the weekend ...for me, I'm off to spend the weekend with young people from my church ... fun :)

"Some Catholics have a concept I very much admire: the Sacrament of the Present Moment. It suggests that every moment of our lives is sacred, and that we should make of each moment a sacrament. Were we to do this we would think of the entire world as ...

How to be remarkable
Friday 19th September 2008 @ 10:21 pm / random life / 0 comments

Found this on a friends blog ... and its really interesting reading ...

The desire to be remarkable probably sits somewhere in each of us - its probably one of those things that we don't talk about much, or admit to. But its there - the desire for remarkability ...

and lets face it, I believe in a most remarkable God - and I believe that he made and you in that image. So how are we to not be remarkable?
